IPPA TO HOST FIRST EVER CRICKET TOURNAMENT FOR SCHOOLS
Irvine, Ca: The Irvine Pakistani Parents Association (IPPA), a non-profit
organization, will be hosting the first ever “Tape Ball”Cricket tournament in February 2012. The tournament, known as the Irvine Premier League T10 (IPL T10) follows the same format as the popular Indian Premier League, which is an annual success in pro-cricket. Registered players went through a valuation process and were then drafted by seven IPL T10 teams, during a formal draft held in early December 2011. Each team has a squad of fifteen semi-pro and amateur cricketers from Irvine and surrounding cities. The tournament will be played in Irvine, at the Irvine Company’s massive parking lot facility, near the Irvine Spectrum (corner of Alton Parkway/Gateway). Imran Ashraf, one of the tournament organizers considers the facility as “ideal” for tape ball cricket and believes the “central location”will certainly generate some “local interest.”
IPL T10 league commissioner and current IPPA Treasurer, Farhan Aziz, an Irvine resident, is excited about introducing the sport to the city of Irvine. “As a partner of the Irvine Public Schools Foundation, the IPPA looks for unique ways to raise funds for our schools. The IPL tournament promises to be high octane action, and an exciting introduction
to cricket for South County residents.”Farhan went on to explain “Tape ball cricket has a tremendous following in the Indian Sub-Continent, and of all the various formats of the game, this perhaps is the most transportable. Most school
playgrounds can easily accommodate this type of cricket.” IPPA Secretary Zehra Akbar expects “spectators will not only enjoy the cricket action, but we will also have local food vendors serving ethnic dishes from India and Pakistan, to help spice things up!”
The tournament will be held on February 11, 12 and will conclude on the 25th. The IPPA is expecting a number of officials/dignitaries to be in attendance. Entrance to see the matches is free, and hats/folding chairs highly recommended.
