January 21, 2013 (Irvine): As the Great Park project moves forward with plans to expand the “sports village,” Cricket fans in Irvine and Orange County are celebrating as the Irvine City Council confirmed Cricket as one of the sports to be played in the multi-sport facility. The Irvine Pakistani Parents Association (IPPA) had previously urged the City Council to consider Cricket, the second most popular sport in the world, to be included in the Great Park plans – Councilman Larry Agran, who had taken great interest in this effort, shared the good news with IPPA President, Farhan Aziz.
Farhan added “Cricket is a sport followed by almost 2 billion people around the globe. For the City of Irvine to recognize the growing interest in this sport, amongst its residence and neighbors, is truly inspiring. We are committed to helping the City of Irvine in this initiative and excited for the thousands of Cricket enthusiasts in the area.”
With the momentum for the Great Park project in high gear, it is anticipated that the sports village will be fully developed in the next 24 – 36 months.
